WOODSTOCK, Va. (WHSV) – Every spring, honey bees all across the Commonwealth are busy pollinating flowers in droves. The problem is that springtime is also when farmers begin spraying their fields with pesticides and other crop protectants, which can be deadly to bees.
That’s why BeeCheck was created, an app that allows farmers and other interested parties to check where apiaries are located so that they don’t impact them with their spraying.
With over 50 years of beekeeping experience, Shenandoah Bee Supply owner Bill Gartner is an avid user of the app and says it’s a great way to communicate with applicators to avoid bee damage.
“They’ll either contact me or they’ll get the farmer to contact me 24 hours in advance to let me know that, hey, we’re going to be spraying across the road, because that’s within my flight range of my bees”, Gartner said.
